UVC for Microbial Control - Summary
Chapter member Doug Smith presented an overview of sources of microbial agents and remedy methods. Molds, bacteria and viruses broadly make up the group know as bio-aerosols and these agents are generally not beneficial to humans or HVAC components. The remediation and prevention of these organisms leads to improved system efficiency and better indoor air quality for occupants. Mechanical cleaning of HVAC coils does not remove all contaminants and may in fact increase the density of such contaminants in the center of the coil. Remediation and prevention can be accomplished by UVc radiation applied to the leaving side of cooling coils. Specially designed UVc lamps can provide sufficient luminosity even at the depressed air temperatures found in air handling equipment. The coil, drain pan and other air handling unit components can remain free from microbial growth with no degradation to these components.

President's Message

We have finally gotten the year off after being delayed by the hurricanes.  The October meeting at Dubsdread went well.  I believe that we have made a good decision in changing our meeting location.  One of the comments that I did get is to provide different beer at the portable bar on the veranda.  They will be providing more import beers for the next meeting.  Regrettably our last meeting ran a little long due to the installation of officers for this year.  Click on the "Officers" button for a list of this years officers and committee chairs.  I am excited about a great year of ASHRAE ahead of us with great volunteers as well as great responsibilities.

The Central Florida Chapter of ASHRAE has been struggling to keep the cost of our monthly meetings down but we are going to have to increase the fee.  We have not increased the meeting fees for many years and it has gotten to the point that we were losing money on the meetings.  We have increased the cost to $25 from $20 and this will still just cover the cost to host the meeting.  While I regret having to increase the fee, I feel that you are still getting a great value.

Keeping with the money theme, we have set up the web page so that you can pre-pay for the meetings using a credit card using the PayPal system.  You must register with PayPal but it will allow you to save your credit information so that it is very to use it for subsequent transactions.  You will get a receipt for your transaction e-mailed to you and I have included a sample receipt below.  We can not accept credit cards at the meeting so if you do not pre-pay, you will have to pay with cash or check at the door.

For those of you who may not know, Miguel has moved out of the area; therefore, he is not available to take your reservations for the meetings.

Dear Damon Lynn,

This email confirms that you have paid ASHRAE-CFL (
dlynn@grgce.com) $25.00 USD using PayPal.

This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as "PAYPAL *ASHRAE CFL".

Message: Damon Lynn

The September meeting that was cancelled due to the hurricanes will be re-scheduled to March 3rd.  This was the date for our "Third Annual Key West Shrimp Boil."  This will keep our meetings consistently on the First Thursday of the month but we are going to have to re-schedule the shrimp boil.  We have two dates tentatively reserved.  If you have a preference for one of the dates, please vote using the form below.  Please note that St. Patrick's Day is Thursday March 17th, and March 25th is Good Friday.

  • Which date do you prefer for the Shrimp Boil Social?

    Thursday March 10th
    Friday March 25th

ASHRAE Winter Meeting “Word Bites”

Don’t miss the ASHRAE Dissemination Train!

Never before in the history of ASHRAE has Region XII had the opportunity to host a Winter Meeting and AHR Expo. February 5 - 9 in Orlando is a chance for you as an ASHRAE Member of Region XII, to ride up the road to Orlando and take advantage of the opportunity to participate in current state-of-the-art Technical Presentations in workshops, seminars and forums on subjects that you deal with every day.  Then take time to stroll through more than one million square feet of HVAC Products on display and talk to manufacturers about applying their products in your projects.  Never has this ASHRAE Dissemination Train been so close to your back door!  Register for the meeting today at http://www.ashrae.org/orlando and they will assist you with hotel accommodations and schedules.  In addition, you may contact William M. Dillard at bdillard@msifla.com for any specific information you need to attend this exciting “must see” HVAC Industry event.  See you at the ASHRAE Winter Meeting!

Addendum 62n

Improving the Standard for Improving IAQ

Addendum 62n has modified the complete Ventilation Rate Procedure.  This includes both the ventilation rates that were first prescribed by the 1989 version of Standard 62 and the associated design calculations.  The new rates now better account for additivity by addressing both people and building area as separate pieces of the total ventilation requirement.  Using Equation 6-1 of Addendum 62n, design engineers can account explicitly for occupant density with two rates, one per occupant and the other per unit of occupiable floor area and then add the resulting airflows together.

The Addendum also mandates a new design procedure to find the minimum intake of outdoor airflow.  Table 6.1 of the Addendum includes new occupancy categories and expresses the ventilation rates as minimum requirements, while Table 6.4 prescribes minimum exhaust rates for 19 occupancy categories in which strong contaminant sources are present.  In addition, Standard Compliance now permits the use of conditions averaged over three time-constants for intermittent occupancy and allows dynamic reset during operation to match intake airflow to the present ventilation needs.

Ammonia as an Alternative Refrigerant

PART 1 of a multi-part series on Ammonia Refrigeration:

The major impact of environmental concerns now and in the future due to use of hydrochloroflourocarbon based refrigerants highly grounds new and extended use of one of the oldest industrial refrigerants, ammonia.  Ammonia (NH3, R-717) is an alkaline, a colorless chemical compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, and a very good alternative refrigerant for refrigeration purposes, AC systems, and chemical process systems.

Ammonia has a low boiling point of -28 F @ 0 psig, an ozone depletion potential of 0.00 when released into the atmosphere and a high latent heat of vaporization (meaning very efficient heat transfer in a closed refrigeration system) all aiding in excellent thermodynamic and thermo physical properties.  The low boiling point makes it possible to have refrigeration temperatures considerably below zero without using pressures below atmospheric in the evaporator.  Its latent heat of vaporization of 565 Btu/lb @ approximately 5 F exemplifies large refrigeration effects with relatively small sized machinery.

Although ammonia is a hazardous material, certain common refrigeration, process and AC systems are being redesigned to overcome this problem and therefore take advantage of the environmental and thermodynamic capabilities.  Further complete applications and cycles of this refrigerant in systems will be described in future newsletters.

Correlation Between Temperature and Productivity in Altamonte Springs

A study by a Cornell University ergonomics professor found a correlation between typing mistakes and temperature. When an office temperature was cut from 77 degrees to 68 degrees, typing mistakes rose by 74 percent and typing output fell by 46 percent.

"This study shows that when employees get chilly, at least in this case, they are not working to their full potential," said Alan Hedge, the researcher.

Hedge placed data loggers at nine employee workstations to take air temperatures every 15 minutes for a month. The data were then correlated with typing data for the month.

The study was conducted at Insurance Office of America's corporate headquarters in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and presented this summer at the annual Eastern Ergonomics Conference in New York City.
