AMA: Childhood Asthma Rates May Be Leveling Off

A recent anaylsis of childhood asthma trends may signal changes in the disease's prevalence, according to this report from the American Medical Association.

Though significant questions persist, the study, led by Lara J. Akinbami, MD, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics, is being viewed as encouraging.

Deadly Legionnaires' Outbreak Traced to Civic Center AC

LONDON - An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease this month in northwest England has been traced to an air-conditioning unit at a Civic Center in Barrow-in-Furness, health officials said on Tuesday.

Mold Closes Section of ASHRAE 2002 Meeting Hotel

HONOLULU - The section of the hotel that housed ASHRAE's 2002 Annual Meeting has been temporarily closed after mold was found in the building.

Hilton closed Kalia Tower's 453 hotel rooms on July 24 after a cleaning attendant found the mold Eurotium. Kalia Tower is the newest of six towers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

ASHRAE held its Annual Meeting on June 22-26. Most functions were held in unaffected areas. However, some ASHRAE members stayed in Kalia Tower.

Honeywell Buys Sensor Unit from Invensys

LONDON - Honeywell and Invensys plc said today that Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions (ACS) has signed an agreement to acquire Invensys Sensor Systems for $415 million in cash.

Invensys Sensor Systems is a global supplier of sensors and controls used in the medical, office automation, aerospace, HVAC, automotive, off-road vehicle and consumer appliance industries.

ASHRAE Funds New Research

HONOLULU - Five research projects, totaling $651,156, were approved at ASHRAE's 2002 Annual Meeting June 22-26. The projects are in the areas of energy conservation, indoor air quality, comfort and health, and fire and safety.

The projects include models to simulate performance of high efficiency equipment with R-22 alternatives, equations to ensure proper sizing of smoke control fans, and a database of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) associated with mold growth in problem building environments.

ATLANTA - A proposed companion guideline to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) proposed residential ventilation standard is under development.

Guideline 24P, Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings, is the companion guideline to proposed ASHRAE Standard 62.2P, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings.
