IN THE BEGINNING
If you had been a member of ASHRAE in 1960 and wished to participate in and receive the benefits of Chapter activities, once a month around 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon, you would meet some like-minded friends at some convenient place, get into as few cars as possible, and head for Tampa. After a couple of years of doing that, it would get pretty old; so on the long ride back and forth you start thinking about all the people in Central Florida who are in this business and asking why can't we have a chapter in Orlando, and do them and us a favor. That's what four of the first five past presidents listed on the next page, and a few other civic-minded individuals did.

They started talking to their friends and competitors. They wrote to Society headquarters and were told that within the geographic boundaries from Ormond Beach to Vero Beach on the East Coast and from Leesburg to Lakeland on the western side of the state, there were already 50-60 known members in existence. As a result of their efforts, a charter was granted and the Central Florida Chapter started meeting in the fall of 1962, with 70 assigned members. Due to the perennial Florida problem of retirees, they struggled to get twenty active participants; but they persisted, and thanks to their efforts and those of a lot of people who followed them, the Chapter has grown and flourished to what it is today.

Board of Governor's Dinner with Society President Kent Peterson and DRC Ross Montgomery

On November 15th, Ross Montgomery ( Region XII DRC) was taking Kent Peterson on a tour around the state and was able to carve some time out for a casual dinner with the Central Florida Board of Governor's.  Kent went over some of the current issues that Society is pushing for on a national and international stage as well as looking for potential changes that would improve ASHRAE for all.

He asked for information...so we gave him our perspectives of what could improve ASHRAE.  From improving the speed of business, to getting     younger in the society and at meetings, to getting information out to the members better...a general internal search of what we felt would benefit our membership in Central Florida.  We talked about providing CEU's for engineers and contractors...certification programs that would mean something being backed by ASHRAE, as well as getting ourselves back in front of our standards that others are using/referencing/interpreting.

It was a great evening, capped by a heck of a "dessert coffee" and good conversation.  It was honor for him to carve out the time... and it was much appreciated by those in attendance.
