Leadership Profile: Rich King, P.E., Past President
Mr. Rich King, P.E., served as President of the ASHRAE Central Florida Chapter during the 2009-2010 year and also served at the regional level as webmaster and chapter programs. Since completing his presidential term in our Chapter, Rich has continued his service work on the board of the University Club in downtown Orlando. Professionally, he is currently transitioning into the role of President of Peninsula Engineering, Inc. Peninsula Engineering has employed a number of past and current presidents and officers, including Paul Halyard, P.E., ASHRAE Fellow, John Elsea, John Miller, Paul Albers and Kyle Inge.
Rich began his engineering career by receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University. After graduation, he briefly worked as a plant facility engineering in southern Georgia before moving to the Central Florida area. In Orlando, Mr. King worked for Walt Disney World’s department of Architecture and Facilities Engineering. Through the relationships he formed while working at Disney, Rich moved to Peninsula Engineering to continue providing consulting engineering services for Disney and other area attractions and hospitality clients.
In the midst of his professional development, Rich began to involve himself with the ASHRAE Central Florida Chapter, eventually rising to the position of Chapter President. Looking back on his tenure, he considers is greatest achievement was being a part of the best Chapter in the Region XII. Mr. King continues to mentor new members of our Chapter and encourages them to become involved at the Chair or Officer level. Some of his recruits include; Paul Albers (2017-2018 Chapter President), Kyle Inge (2017-2018 President Elect), and Taylor Lewis (2017-2018 Electronic Communications Chair).
When asked what advice he would give to the new leaders of our Chapter, Rich said, “Learning to work with others in a leadership role in the Chapter provides an excellent experience for leadership within a company. If you can motivate volunteers towards a common goal, then you have a distinct advantage to lead people within a paid organization. Relationships formed during this period develop into lifelong friendships.”
